Hazchem Information for UK Emergency Services.

Hazardous Chemicals and Dangerous Goods are transported throughout the United Kingdom, by road and by rail, every day. These goods include dangerous chemicals such as acids, toxins and carcinogenic substances; explosives, radioactive materials, and inflammable liquids; volatile chemicals likely to spontaneously combust or react with air, water etc.; and inflammable, poisonous or compressed gases.

Although the Health and Safety Executive is primarily responsible for enforcing the many regulations designed to ensure safety while these substances are in transit, it is the members of the emergency services who will have to deal with the consequences of any incident.

When looking in to the subject prior to a work-related training course I found it difficult to get the most of the large amount of information on the internet. A lot of it was buried in other sites or not indexed very well. Most of the really useful sites were American or Australian in origin. I hope that I have made it easier to find what you need. However, the usual disclaimers must apply. I will do my best to keep the site updated, but you must verify any information on it before acting - I take no responsibility for it. There is nothing like a traffic police officer to find error in anything - if you find one, let me know by clicking here.

This web site brings together information from several sources and includes links to other sites which, although intended primarily for emergency services personnel, will be of use to anyone with an interest in the subject.

Research sources included:

  • Metropolitan Police Traffic Patrol Manual.
  • ACPO National Motorway Policing Manual.
  • London Emergency Services Liaison Panel (LESLP) Major Incident Manual.
