Accident Investigation Calculator

SimpleAI has a number of specific calculations accessed from the main menu.

Skidding

Enter length of skid mark, road / tyre coefficient of friction, and final / impact speed, and SimpleAI will calculate the speed at the start of the skid marks. Select the stack option if you wish to use the result as the initial speed for another calculation in a skidding sequence.

Critical Curve

Enter road / tyre coefficient of friction, length of chord and mid-ordinate, and SimpleAI will calculate the curve radius and vehicle speed at the start of the marks.

Pedestrian Throw

Enter displacement and select Appel type and SimpleAI will calculate approximate impact speed, Searle minimum and maximum speeds, and Appel speed. Pedestrian / road coefficient of friction may be altered and Searle values recalculated.

Multi-Surface Skid

SimpleAI uses this routing to analyse a linear sequence of skidding events. Up to 6 sections with changing road/tyre coefficients of friction and skid lengths can be handled. Tick the [COMPLETE] box when the section details are correct. Ticking the [ABORT] box exits the routine. When data for all sections has been entered, SimpleAI will calculate section start and end speeds, time across section, and total skid length and time, and draw a graphical representation of the sequence to scale.

Safe Speed for Vision

Enter driver reaction time, available distance or maximum visibility, and road/tyre coefficient of friction, and SimpleAI will calculate the maximum speed from which the driver could react and stop the vehicle in the given distance.

Speed vs. Limit Stop

Enter the prevailing speed limit in miles per hour, driver reaction time, speed of vehicle and road/tyre coefficient of friction. SimpleAI will calculate stopping distances at the speed limit and at the vehicle speed, speed of the vehicle when a vehicle travelling at the limit would stop, and calculate the additional stopping distance for the speeding vehicle.

Ped. Crossing Time

Enter pedestrian speed and distance walked and SimpleAI will calculate the time taken.

Book Max. Acceleration

Enter a vehicle's book 0-60 mph time and SimpleAI will calculate its acceleration in metres per second.

Time to fall from height.

SimpleAI will calculate the time taken to fall to the ground from any given height.

Lane Change

Enter the lateral displacement, vehicle speed and road/tyre coefficient of friction, and SimpleAI will calculate the minimum time and distance to complete the lane change manouevre.

Overturn Speed

Enter the curve radius, height of centre of mass and track width for the vehicle, and crossfall or camber for the road. SimpleAI will calculate the overturn speed, and the value for the minimum road/tyre coefficient of friction needed for the vehicle to roll before skidding.

Side Impact Damage

Enter the maximum crush in centimetres following a side impact and SimpleAI will approximate a range of impact speeds.

Speedo Error

Enter actual speed and SimpleAI will calculate the range of speeds a speedometer may display and remain within legal limits.
