UNITED NATIONS

SUBSTANCE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

The four-digit United Nations Substance Identification Number (UN SIN or UN Number) is an international standard number which identifies the substance concerned. It is found on the HAZCHEM or ADR Panel.

To identify a substance from a UN Number, click here, and follow the instructions on screen. Alternatively, go to the chemical databases page and use the links there. The University of Akron database will identify a substance with number xxxx if you search on 'UN xxxx'.

If you are out and about, HazMatLink offers the HazText service using mobile 'phone text messaging.  Send HazMat XXXX [where XXXX is the UN Number in question] to 60300, and you will get a message back with basic information.  If I recall correctly, it's 50 pence + your usual text message fee.

For Example, sending HazMat 1017 will get you the following information:

CHLORINE       Haz: toxic gas + corrosive     EAC:2XE APP: A(c)
